Once a year my daughter's daycare arranges a day out for all the kids and parents to the local petting zoo. Today was that day.
This little "collection" of farm animals is in Vancouver's downtown park - Stanley Park. We had a great time - glorious sunshine, the kids were very funny and the animals were accepting of little patting hands.
Only a knitter can get excited about this picture - check out the freshly sheared llama. Where's the wool?
In knitting news, I've been knitting away like a fiend on the cardigan for my daughter. I got so caught up in the shawl I completely forgot about time flying by. It's her birthday on July 5 and I want to finish the cardigan in time to give it to her for her big day.
And I have one more birthday in July - hubby's. He wants a pair of hiking socks. Can you suggest any good patterns for heavier socks? And what yarn would I use?

Great pictures; it looks as though everyone had a fun time.
How about the Log Cabin socks from Handknit Holidays? They are heavier than a normal sock and very fun to knit.

Good luck with your gift knitting! Your lace looks great too. Isn't it just addictive?

I use a basic sock pattern with 2x2 rib when I knit Dan or my Dad boot socks. Both have told me that they prefer less patterning when wearing tight ankle high boots. I also knit hiking socks in a worsted weight wool. Other fibers just don't hold up as well.
By the way, then Petting Zoo pictures are adorable.

Looks like a fun day.
I'd probably do a ribbed sock for hiking and use a worsted weight yarn. They'll be more cushy. (If you want a cably sock, though, Handknit Holidays has a great Log Cabin Socks pattern.)

looks like it was a great, fun day with the kids at the petting zoo! I'm sure you'll be able to finish your daughter's cardi in time for her bday. your shawl is just gonna have to wait, but it will be patient, I'm sure. :)

Cute pics!! Sorry, I have no men's sock pattern suggestions. Tiennie of Tiennie Knits makes a lot of mens' socks - also you may want to check the KAL I started earlier this year (which has almost died out) called the Manly Gift Along. There are some socks posted there (by Tiennie and others.) It's at http://yarncrawl.typepad.com/manlygiftalong.

I agree that men usually like plain socks. I use 2x2 ribbing for the cuff and keep the ribbing going on the top of the foot so it hugs a little. But I think a sport weight yarn is plenty bulky. Worsted weight socks can be too fat to get into your shoes.
What is the beastie in the first photo?

What a fun day!
What about Thuja from Knitty.com? Or just a simple 6x1 rib?

Plain vanilla socks are always good. =) Hubby likes those and his other favorite are a 4x2 rib, he said he prefers it because it keeps the leg up so it doesn't sag.
